Oops!

I thought I would take Ross out on a drive to the country and do a little 4x4ing.  What started out as a casual afternoon drive upstream near Eniwa, ended in a complete disaster.  I've got to thank Shane for driving out and finding us on the side of the highway in all that darkness.  Also, big thanks to Yusei for driving me back out there the next day with shovels and a winch to rescue my poor Jimny.  Unfortunately, some jerk decided to steal my toolbox before I got back there.  >_<  Lesson learned here: always go with your gut and never listen to the passenger!

  1. Reading your blog - very enjoyable. I've been several times to Hokkaido - inlaws are out of Asahikawa and have a cabin in Niseko about two blocks from the slopes.

Just curious - the economy sucks right now here in Florida and I've considered moving to Hokkaido to give the kids time with their grandparents (perhaps a year or two). What type of jobs are available (besides the obvious of teaching English) in the area? Is there a expat community or are they few and far between?

I'm a software developer, but I'm not sure there is an opportunity to do that in Hokkaido considering that I don't speak Japanese proficiently.

My wife's cousin owns two bars - maybe I could bartend....just thinking out loud. What are most expats doing for work?

  2. Although it's hard to beat the high salary / low responsibility of English teaching, larger cities such as Sapporo will offer other choices, especially if you speak Japanese.

There are a number of expat communities, most prominently Sapporo and Niseko (which has become known as "Bali with snow" due to being overrun by westerners.) In such areas it's possible to seek employment with no Japanese whatsoever.
